- ***** VIRUS DETECTED DURING INSTALLATION *****
-
- If a virus is detected on your machine during installation perform
- the following steps prior to installing the Norton AntiVirus files:
-
- 1. Turn off your computer.
-
- 2. Insert a bootable, uninfected DOS diskette into Drive A. The
- DOS version on the diskette should be the same as the version of DOS
- installed on your hard disk.
-
- 3. Boot your machine from the diskette in Drive A. Enter the time and
- date if requested to do so.
-
- 4. Replace the DOS diskette with Disk 1 of your original Norton AntiVirus
- program diskettes and at the A> prompt enter:
-
- NAV
-
- 5. Scan all hard disk drives and repair or remove any viruses found.
- For information regarding repairing and removing viruses see
- the section entitled "Eliminating Viruses" on page 9 of the
- "The Norton AntiVirus Installation Guide".
-
- 6. After all viruses have been removed exit to DOS and restart the
- installation program by entering:
-
- INSTALL
-
-
- ***** INSTALLING VIRUS INTERCEPT ON A BOOTABLE DISKETTE *****
-
- If you wish to make a bootable diskette that loads either the 1K or 6K
- Virus Intercept device driver then both the NAV&.SYS and NAV_.SYS files
- must be present on the diskette. In addition, the path to the device
- driver must be explicitly specified in a CONFIG.SYS file on the floppy
- disk. For example:
-
- DEVICE=A:\NAV&.SYS /B
-
- or
-
- DEVICE=C:\NAV\NAV&.SYS /B

- ***** UPGRADING FROM VERSION 1.0 OR 1.5 *****
-
- To upgrade to Version 2.0 from any previous version of Norton AntiVirus
- simply run the Install program, as outlined in your installation guide.
- You should take the following items into consideration:
-
- 1. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains a line executing NAV with the /C+
- compatibility switch, for example: C:\NAV\NAV /C+, delete this line.
-
- 2. It is no longer necessary for QEMM and 386Max users to exclude the
- monochrome video address (B000-B7FF). If you have previously excluded
- this address, the parameter X=B000-B7FF (for QEMM) or EXCLUDE=B000-B7FF
- (for 386MAX) appears in your CONFIG.SYS file at the end of your
- QEMM386.SYS or 386MAX.SYS statement. You may wish to delete this
- exclusion parameter.
-
- 3. If you were starting Windows using the WINDOWS.BAT file described in
- the NAV 1.0 and NAV 1.5 READ.ME files you no longer have to do so.
- Delete the WINDOWS.BAT file and use the WIN command in order to start
- Windows.
-
-
- ***** CHOOSING AND USING THE PROTECTION THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU *****
-
- There are three device drivers in The Norton AntiVirus each designed to
- reside quietly on your system and watch for viruses. They require 1K, 6K,
- and 39K of memory respectively. Which device driver is right for you
- depends on your system's requirements. The following information can help
- you choose the right protection for your computer. Each of the device
- drivers operates and detects viruses in DOS and Windows and can take
- advantage of your high memory when loaded high.
-
- NAV&.SYS (1K device driver)
- If you have limited memory or if you have a large number of TSRs
- loaded into high memory, use NAV&.SYS. This very small device driver
- detects viruses when an infected program is run. But because of its
- small size, it does not detect Boot Sector infections and does not
- bring up visual Virus Intercept alerts while in Microsoft Windows.
-
- NAV&.SYS /B [/A] (6K device driver)
- This small device driver performs the same operations as the 1K device
- driver with the addition of Boot Sector virus detection. Virus
- Intercept Alerts appear under Microsoft Windows (when NAVPOPUP.EXE is
- loaded).
-
- The inclussion of the /A option causes drive B: to be scanned instead
- of drive A: when <Ctrl-Alt-Del> is pressed.
-
- NAV_.SYS [/A] [/W] (39K device driver)
- This device driver performs all of the operations of the 1K and 6K
- versions and also scans files during a DOS copy operation.
-
- Like the 1K and 6K device drivers, it will detect a virus in an
- infected program upon execution. Additionally, NAV_.SYS will prevent
- you from copying an infected program from a diskette onto your
- computer. Virus Intercept Alerts appear under Microsoft Windows
- (when NAVPOPUP.EXE is loaded).
-
- The inclussion of the /A option causes drive B: to be scanned instead
- of drive A: when <Ctrl-Alt-Del> is pressed.
-
- By adding the /W parameter, you can enable a Write Protection feature
- notifies you when any program attempts to alter a partition table or
- boot sector. You may then make a selection to allow or deny the
- operation.
-
-
- ***** VIRUS CLINIC NOTES *****
-
- The documentation describes a /H switch from the command line for
- help. This is incorrect. The valid switches for help are /HELP /?
- or simply ? as such:
-
- NAV /HELP
-
-
- ***** VIRUS INTERCEPT NOTES *****
-
- When boot sector viruses are detected by NAV&.SYS /B, the Virus Alert
- message is displayed on the 25th line of the screen. If the current
- display is in graphics mode an audible alarm will sound although an
- alert message will not be displayed. The Microsoft Windows graphical
- environment is fully supported and the popup is available.
-
-
- ***** VIRUS INTERCEPT WITHIN MICROSOFT WINDOWS *****
-
- Each of the three Virus Intercept device drivers included in The Norton
- AntiVirus operates with Microsoft Windows.
-
- If you are using the 6K (NAV&.SYS /B) or 39K (NAV_.SYS) Virus Intercept
- device drivers, the NAVPOPUP utility enables Virus Intercept to display
- the alert boxes in Windows. Since these alert boxes are of System
- Error type, the button labels are different from the DOS button labels.
- However, the functionality of both the DOS and Windows alert boxes is
- similar. The timeout feature, however, is not available in the Windows
- type alert boxes.
-
- If this utility is not run when in Windows and you execute an
- application that displays in graphics mode, you will not see a Virus
- Alert message on the screen when a virus is detected. You will,
- however, hear the audible alarm, regardless of whether the Special Sound
- option is set on or off.
-
- If you used the Norton AntiVirus Install program (INSTALL.EXE),
- NAVPOPUP is automatically run whenever you start Windows. If you did
- not run the Install program, edit your WIN.INI file so that Windows
- loads NAVPOPUP upon startup. In the [WINDOWS] section, find the line
- that begins with "LOAD=" and add a space and the following to the end
- of that line:
-
- c:\nav\navpopup.exe
-
- This example assumes that the Norton AntiVirus was installed into the
- \NAV directory on drive C. If not, substitute the correct drive and
- directory in the above statement.
-
- Please note that NAVPOPUP does not work with the 1K (NAV&.SYS) Virus
- Intercept device driver.
-
- In a similar manner, the Install program will install a device driver
- to monitor events in Windows. This device driver is called VNAVD.386.
- If you did not run the Install program, edit your SYSTEM.INI file so
- that Windows loads VNAVD.386 upon startup. In the [386Enh] section,
- add the following line:
-
- device=C:\NAV\VNAVD.386
-
- This also assumes that you installed into the \NAV directory on drive C.
-
- If you run Windows in standard mode and have 1 Megabyte or less RAM
- use NAV&.SYS /B as the device driver for best results.
-
- For more information regarding Norton AntiVirus and Microsoft Windows,
- see the Compatibility Information section of this READ.ME file.
-
-
- ***** LOADING BOTH NAV_.SYS AND NAV&.SYS *****
-
- If you load both NAV_.SYS and NAV&.SYS, in any order, only the driver
- loaded first will be effective. The second driver will display the
- message "The Norton AntiVirus already loaded".
-
-
- ***** CONFIGURATION INFORMATION IN NAV_.SYS *****
-
- The Norton AntiVirus stores its configuration and other information in
- NAV_.SYS. Consequently, NAV_.SYS should not be marked READ-ONLY.
- Virus definitions are read into memory at boot time. If Virus Intercept is
- active and you add or delete virus definitions, these changes will take
- effect for Virus Intercept only AFTER you reboot. They will, however,
- immediately take effect in Virus Clinic.
-
-
- ***** NAV_.SYS CANNOT BE READ FROM OR WRITTEN TO *****
-
- When active in memory, NAV_.SYS prevents any reads or writes to itself.
- Consequently, you cannot view, erase, modify, or change the attributes of
- the NAV_.SYS file while Virus Intercept is active.
-
-
- ***** WARM BOOT TRAP *****
-
- TSRs, device drivers or programs that trap for the <Ctrl-Alt-Del> keyboard
- sequence may override Virus Intercept's ability to check during reboot for
- any boot sector viruses on the floppy disks in your drives.
-
- Likewise, programs that perform a warm boot without use of the <Ctrl-Alt-Del>
- keyboard sequence will bypass Virus Intercept's automatic boot sector check.
-
-
- ***** PC XT USERS *****
-
- The boot-sector virus scan during a warm boot using <Ctrl-Alt-Del> is not
- supported on the PC XT.
-
-
- ***** INOCULATION FILES *****
-
- When the Detect Unknown Viruses option is checked in the Options menu
- Global selection, an inoculation file named NAV_._NO is placed in the root
- directory of each local hard drive and each floppy drive that is not write-
- protected. The hidden and system attributes are set for this file so
- it does not appear in normal directory listings. It contains information
- that enables NAV to determine if your program files change in a manner
- that could indicate virus activity.
-
- On networks, a single NAV_._NO file is created for each volume of the
- network, and appears in the directory specified in the Options menu Global
- selection. The default directory is \NCDTREE. This directory is automatically
- created for each volume provided the user has access rights to the directory.
-
- A suggested procedure for network administrators is to enable inoculation and
- scan the network drives to create the inoculation data for all system files
- during the initial installation of The Norton AntiVirus. A special network
- operators guide is available.
-
- To delete this file from The Norton AntiVirus, go to the Tools menu Uninoculate
- selection and specify the drives on which you wish to remove the file. If
- Detect Unknown Viruses is checked, the file will be created again.
-
-
- ***** AUDIT TRAIL FILE *****
-
- If you have entered a value for the Timeout for the Virus Alert Message in
- the Options menu Intercept selection, you must specify an Audit Trail file,
- so that a record is kept of any virus alerts.
-
-
- ***** SPECIAL SOUND *****
-
- When the Special Sound option is enabled, keyboard input is not recorded
- until the sound ends.
-
- The NAV&.SYS and NAV&.SYS /B Virus Intercept drivers will play the Special
- Sound when detecting a boot sector virus, regardless of whether or not the
- Special Sound option is enabled. This guarantees that you are alerted when
- a boot sector virus is present.
-
-
- ***** EGA USERS *****
-
- In the Windows version of Virus Clinic, only the first two logical drives
- are initially visible in the Scan Drives dialog box. To list and/or
- select other drives, use the scroll bar.
-
-
- ****************
- * NEW FEATURES *
- ****************
-
- ***** PARTITION TABLE AND BOOT SECTOR WRITE PROTECTION *****
-
- The comprehensive device driver, NAV_.SYS, now has the ability to alert you
- to any attempts to write to the partition table and boot sector of the
- hard disk, as well as the boot sector of any disks in the local floppy disk
- drives. This adds a level of security against unknown viruses by monitoring
- the disk areas that they infect, and alerting you to attempts to change
- these areas.
-
- Should you get a Write Protect alert, you will have the option of allowing
- the write attempt to proceed or not.
-
- The Write Protect feature is activated by the /W switch. For example,
- DEVICE=C:\NAV\NAV_.SYS /W will load the comprehensive device driver and
- activate the write protection feature.
-
- During normal operation, you should not get a Write Attempt warning unless
- you are formatting a floppy disk, or using a program with the ability to
- edit the system areas, such as the DISKEDIT or NDD (Norton Disk Doctor)
- programs from The Norton Utilities.
-
- NOTE: This feature is not available with the NAV&.SYS and NAV&.SYS /B
- Virus Intercept drivers.
-
-
- *****************************
- * COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION *
- *****************************
-
- ***** 43 COLUMNS and ANSI.SYS with DOS 4.0/4.01 *****
-
-
- There is a bug in the ANSI.SYS driver that comes with DOS 4 which causes
- video sync problems when attempting a change to the number of screen
- rows (lines). The display becomes totally unreadable, but everything
- remains functional. This operation is available in Video and Mouse
- Settings selection of the Options menu in Virus Clinic, especially when
- changing to 43 rows.
-
- If this problem is experienced, check for the following line in the
- CONFIG.SYS file:
-
- DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
-
- And modify it to include the /L switch similar to:
-
- DEVICE=ANSI.SYS /L
-
-
- ***** MICROSOFT WINDOWS *****
-
- The Windows version of Virus Clinic, NAVW.EXE, does not support the Windows
- REAL mode.
-
- When <Ctrl-Alt-Del> is pressed to warm boot your system, Virus Intercept
- checks the boot sector of any diskette in your bootable floppy disk drive.
- This feature does function under Windows. However, for the highest level
- of protection, it is recommended that you exit Windows prior to rebooting.
-
- If you check Detect Unknown Viruses in the Global selection of the Options
- menu, you MUST also check Auto Inoculate and scan your Windows directories
- prior to executing Windows. Skipping this procedure could result in a system
- hang as you attempt to enter Windows.
-
- You may also use the command line to perform this operation. Simply type the
- following command:
-
- NAV /REFRESH C:\WINDOWS
-
- Substitute the path for your Windows installation for "C:\WINDOWS".
-
- With SHARE.EXE loaded, a number of files will report "Access denied" during
- a scan. This is because these files are exclusively locked by Windows,
- and/or possibly some other application. These files may be scanned by
- exiting from Windows and scanning with the DOS version of clinic.
-
-
- ***** DESQVIEW AND MULTITASKING *****
-
- Use NAV_.SYS when using DESQview. NAV&.SYS does not detect program
- executions under a multitasking environment. In addition, do not run
- Virus Clinic in the background under DESQview, as viruses may not be
- properly identified.
-
-
- ***** QEMM & 386^MAX *****
-
- When using the NAV&.SYS or NAV&.SYS /B Virus Intercept drivers with QEMM
- or 386^MAX memory managers, you may experience a "Batch file missing"
- error when calling a secondary batch file from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
- This is the result of special actions that Virus Intercept must take when
- a LOADHI command is executed.
-
- To correctly check a program being loaded high, Virus Intercept must
- temporarily reserve a block of memory. This memory block is not released
- until a non-resident command other than LOADHI is executed. If this memory
- block is released within a secondary batch file, the pointers back to the
- primary batch file are lost, resulting in the "Batch file missing" message.
-
- This circumstance can be prevented by executing any program or external
- DOS command (other than LOADHI) immediately prior to calling the secondary
- batch file.
-
-
- ***** QEMM STEALTH MODE *****
-
- Users who have enabled QEMM's STEALTH mode must ensure that QEMM appears
- in their CONFIG.SYS file before any of the Norton AntiVirus device drivers.
-
-
- ***** 386^MAX *****
-
- Users of 386MAX version 6.0 who experience problems while using the Windows
- version of The Norton AntiVirus, should ensure that 386MAX has not been
- configured to use an area of memory already in use for ROM BIOS shadowing.
- Using the 386MAX NOROM option will disable 386MAX's ROM BIOS caching
- feature.
-
-
- ***** IBM PS/1 *****
-
- If you are using the PS/1 BUS mouse without a mouse driver, you should
- disable the FAST MOUSE RESET selection, located in the Video and Mouse
- Options of the Options menu.
-
-
- ***** STACKER, DISKREET, AND DEVICE-DRIVEN DRIVES *****
-
- As far as your computer is concerned, device-driven drives do not exist
- until their device drivers are loaded from your CONFIG.SYS file. Device
- driven drives include those created by the SpeedStor or Disk Manager
- partitioning programs, compressed drives such as those created by Stacker
- and encrypted drives such as those created by the Norton Utilities
- Diskreet program.
-
- If Norton AntiVirus is loaded onto one of these drives, the device driver
- statement(s) for the drive MUST appear in your CONFIG.SYS file ABOVE the
- device driver statement that loads Virus Intercept.
-
- Due to a Stacker limitation, if you are using Stacker on removable drives
- such as those made by Syquest or Bernoulli, you will not be able to scan
- non-compressed files on the removable drive. Files compressed under
- Stacker, however, will be scanned normally.
-
-
- ***** COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMS *****
-
- For maximum protection, Virus Intercept alerts halt all other system
- activity. Consequently, time-sensitive communications programs, such as
- ProComm Plus or Crosstalk, may crash or lose data after an alert is
- displayed. Because NAV_.SYS scans only reads from disk, this is likely to
- happen only if you are multitasking or if you are uploading an infected
- file to someone else.
-
-
- ***** BACKUP PROGRAMS *****
-
- Virus Intercept is compatible with most popular backup programs, including
- The Norton Backup Version 1.2. However, there are several special
- considerations that you should be aware of.
-
- 1. You will not be able to back up the NAV_.SYS Virus Intercept driver
- if this driver is currently loaded in memory. Either:
-
- a) tell your backup program to exclude this file, or
- b) reboot your machine, wait until the BIOS beep, and then
- simultaneously hold down both Shift keys until you see the
- message "The Norton AntiVirus Not Loaded". You may then back up
- all files.
-
- 2. Running a backup program while Virus Intercept is running in Detect
- Unknown Viruses mode with Auto-Inoculate OFF may cause an alert as you
- back up any non-inoculated files. The backup program will stop and
- wait for a response to the alert screen. Because some backup programs
- cannot tolerate an unexpected interruption, they may abort.
-
-
- ***** pcANYWHERE *****
-
- If Virus Intercept is running on the host computer and an alert appears,
- the alert is not heard at the remote location. However, if the alert
- is displayed for longer than a few seconds, it will be displayed at
- the remote location.
-
- ***** Q&A USERS *****
-
- If you have difficulty running The Norton AntiVirus from the Q&A main menu,
- create a batch file that executes NAV.EXE and replace the NAV.EXE filename
- in the Q&A utilities menu with the new batch filename.
-
-
- ***** HERCULES GRAPHICS CARD USERS *****
-
- If you are using the NAV_.SYS Virus Intercept driver and a Hercules graphics
- card which does not contain a light pen port, you may experience a system
- lockup if a Virus Intercept Alert appears while your system is running a
- graphics-mode application (such as Windows). To prevent this, turn off
- the visual alert feature of the virus intercept before running Windows
- or other graphics programs.
-
-
- ***** ACER COMPUTERS *****
-
- Computers with ACER BIOS chips may not correctly display graphical
- controls in the DOS version of Virus Clinic. If you experience random
- pixels on the screen, select Standard from the Display Mode combo box in the
- Video and Mouse selection of the Options menu.
-
-

-
- ***** REINOCULATING FILES *****
-
- Virus Clinic identifies program files that have changed since they were
- last scanned as possibly containing an unknown virus. If the files in
- question have changed for a known reason, such as upgrading to a different
- version of the software, reinoculation is suggested.
-
- To reinoculate a file from the Scan Results window:
-
- 1. Select a file identified erroneously as containing an unknown
- virus.
-
- 2. Select Reinoc. The Reinoc Files dialog box appears, giving you
- the option to reinoculate just this file or all infected files.
-
- 3. Select Reinoc to reinoculate only the highlighted file, or
- select Reinoc All to reinoculate all the files reported as
- containing an unknown virus.
-
- Please note that if you do not know why your files may have changed, the
- safest option is delete all unknown virus infected files, and restore
- these files with copies from their original master diskettes.
-
-
- ***** DOS ERROR LEVELS *****
-
- The Norton AntiVirus will return the following DOS error levels after
- exiting from Virus Clinic or upon the completion of a command-line
- function:
-
- ERRORLEVEL MEANING
-
- 1 = Virus found in memory
- 2 = Virus Clinic may be infected
- 3 = Viruses detected during scan
- 4 = No viruses detected
- 5 = Device driver is NOT active in RAM
- 6 = Device driver is active in RAM
- 255 = Scan not completed
-
-
- ***** EXPANDING NORTON PRODUCT EXECUTABLES *****
-
- Many Peter Norton products including The Norton Utilities and The Norton
- AntiVirus save space on your disk by storing the program files in a
- self-extracting, compressed format.
-
- If you are using Norton AntiVirus with Detect Unknown Viruses checked in
- the Options menu Global selection, a Virus Intercept Alert may appear if
- these programs are expanded after they are inoculated. If this occurs,
- reinoculation is recommended.
-
- You can use the command line to perform this operation. Simply type the
- following command:
-
- NAV /REFRESH C:\NU
-
-
- ***** UPGRADING EXISTING SOFTWARE *****
-
-
- If you are using Norton AntiVirus with Detect Unknown Viruses checked in
- the Options menu Global selection and you reinstall an existing piece of
- software in the original directory, update the inoculation information
- with one of two procedures.
-
- Scan the directory that contains the upgraded software using Virus Clinic
- and Reinoc the files that are reported containing an unknown virus.
-
- Alternately, scan the driver from the command line with a command similar to
- this:
-
- NAV /REFRESH C:\123
-
- Replace C:\123 with the directory name that contains your upgraded software.
-
-
- ***** NETWORK USERS *****
-
- Some users may wish to install The Norton AntiVirus on their network drive.
- The NAV_.SYS and the NAV&.SYS files should be copied to your local hard
- drive so that full protection is offered during system startup. Modify
- your system startup procedure as follows, but substitute your selected drive
- and directory for "C:\NAV" in the examples.
-
-
- Add a line in CONFIG.SYS that specifies where NAV_.SYS resides such as:
-
- DEVICE=C:\NAV\NAV_.SYS
-
- This is typically the the first line of the file. It may have been added
- during the installation process and specify the network drive that was the
- object of the install depending on the options selected.
-
- You must also add a line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to tell NAV&.SYS and
- Virus Clinic where to locate configuration files and overlays:
-
- SET NAV=C:\NAV
-
- The positioning of this line within the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is not critical,
- except that it needs to appear before you execute Virus Clinic (NAV.EXE).
-
-
- ***** SMARTDRV.EXE *****
-
- If you have DEVICE=NAV&.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file and encounter problems
- attempting to load SMARTDRV.EXE from a batch file or from the command line,
- you may force it to load low by including the /L switch.
-
- SMARTDRV /L [your parameters]
-
-
- ***** MANUAL INSTALL *****
-
- This section describes special handling when you manually install rather
- than using the supplied install program.
-
- First, the Windows files are included in the file NAVWZIP.EXE. After it is
- copied to the hard disk, simply type NAVWZIP and NAVW.EXE and related files
- will be extracted automatically. You may delete NAVWZIP.EXE from your
- hard drive once this is completed successfully.
-
- Second, the file NAV_.SYS will not copy using the DOS command line if it
- is active in memory (the supplied install handles it fine). To manually copy
- NAV_.SYS, you must first disable NAV_.SYS by rebooting and holding both
- shift keys just after the beep is heard during the boot process. Hold them
- down until the Norton AntiVirus banner is seen. It will report that it is
- inactive. Now you may copy the file NAV_.SYS at will. Once you have completed
- your manual installation, reboot to make NAV_.SYS active in memory once
- again.
-
- ***** END OF FILE *****
-
